The authorities of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has fixed February 1, 2021 for the resumption of its 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 academic sessions.
A statement signed by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Benedicta Ehanire, and made available to journalists in Benin City, said the institution would be open on January 30, for old students for the continuation of first semester academic activities.
Ehanire, who said the first semester is expected to last till April 1, 2021, added that the second semester is scheduled to commence on April 5, 2021.
She explained that for the 2020/2021 academic session fresh students will undergo online clearance from Monday, January 5 to Friday, April 30, while orientation will begin May 3, 2021.
According to her, all old and new students with any ailment are to ensure that they are properly treated before resumption.
“All returning students will be required to fill an on-line questionnaire and submit the print-out to the Dean of Students before resumption,” she said.
She however, advised all returning students to adhere strictly to the COVID-19 precautionary measures which include compulsory use of face masks, hand sanitizers and physical distancing.
Recall that tertiary institutions across the country had suspended academic activities in March 2020 following the federal government’s inability to meet the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) demands.
However, after several dialogues between the union and the federal government, the 9-month-old strike was called off in December, 2020.
